BDN is a community-based development organization which since 2001 has worked towards implementing the Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS) in six provinces of Afghanistan: Daikundi (EC fund), Baghlan (USAID fund), Ghazni (USAID fund), Hirat (USAID fund) and Jawzjan (USAID fund). covering a total of 33 districts, serving 2,864,045 Afghans through 2 Provincial Hospitals, 5 District Hospitals, 7 Comprehensive Health Centres Plus, 30 Comprehensive Health Centres, 45 Basic Health Centres, 15 Sub Centres & mobile clinics, and more than 1,650 Health Posts. BDN works towards scalling up current services as well as increasing the accessibility of these health care services to people in the remotest areas, through the establishment of health Sub Centers (SCs) and Mobile Health Teams. These initiatives are particularly effective in reaching vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, children, nomads, the mentally ill and the disabled. Throughout its efforts to implement the BPHS in its catchment areas, BDN has maintained an unwavering emphasis on a community-based approach to health care, delivered and strengthened through its network of community health workers and local health committees. This community-based approach is reflected in BDN’s core mission – that is, to assist communities in the achievement of their own development goals, shaped by a vision for a world of enabled communities working towards a brighter future.
